Eleanor, an English rose,is persuaded to join a secret department of the British government on graduating from Cambridge University in 1982. She quickly finds out it's a world where bad things can happen, and her plans for a happy family life with her new husband soon lie in ruins. She blames a colleague, 'Action Man', a ruthlessly ambitious bully, brutalised by the horrors of war. Yet most of her work-mates do their best to support each other and serve their country well. With the help of one of them, she survives in the organisation - just - until 2001 when she disappears. This is her tale, told 25 years later, explaining why she went. If you scroll up and click the “Look Inside” feature on the top left-hand side of the page you can read the first few chapters. These tell of Eleanor's harrowing tragedy and the agony she went through. But she triumphs in the end – yet perhaps not quite in the way you might expect. It's fiction, but set against a backdrop of real events and political intrigue from 1957 to 2001. The history of that period is still being written, but perhaps not quite how it really happened. Some people may find the truth disturbing. Eleanor is not a super-hero, nor a super-model (she is conscious of her big feet and small breasts). And like most of us she makes mistakes - and can get hold of the wrong end of the hockey stick. But she thinks about things and tries hard to do her best. She gets scared when faced with danger, but her training sees her through; she remembers the maxim: shit happens, breathe deeply, make a plan. The obnoxious Action Man is her enemy because he is a nasty piece of work. He is a cheat and a liar who treads on others, including Eleanor, in his relentless drive to get to the top. Richard, the colleague who saves her from the slough of despair after her devastating loss, is not handsome nor sexy, nor charismatic in any way. But his kind and thoughtful nature and easy humour give him an attraction which is hard to resist. He's old school – and old fashioned. 'A true gentleman', as Eleanor's mother might have described him. His old pal, Nigel, fancies Eleanor, but he is not interested in settling down and having a family. He is content with his life, which is simply about saving the world from Armageddon. On her journey, Eleanor comes across other people of different nationalities, personalities and sexual orientation. Like in real life, most of them are decent people, doing what they think is right – at least most of the time. Bernie, however, is the exception. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT IT “I have never read a genre of book like this! I LOVED IT! It's very clever and really does have you thinking about the past. Really hoping there will be another book based on Eleanor! Thank you so much for this!” “Eleanor Braithwaite is a fascinating character and I am looking forward to reading more about her adventures in the future.” “[Douglas Renwick] is a great story teller and leaves us wondering if he really knows the truth...”
